About the ENGAGE Award
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Virginia. However, lung cancer screening for eligible individuals remains low, especially among these vulnerable populations. Increased access to lung cancer education, screening and follow-up services are crucial in helping reduce these disparities.
In collaboration with LUNGEVITY, Massey has launched the Equity in Lung Cancer Screening Excellence (ENGAGE) award to help reduce the lung cancer burden across the Massey catchment area.
Up to three grants may be awarded to community-based organizations supporting new initiatives that help promote cancer screening and education. Proposals that address the following areas and have measurable impact will be given priority consideration:
- Increase the number of eligible patients screened for lung cancer
- Facilitate education, access and referrals to smoking cessation services
- Improve access to follow-up care within 30-days for patients that receive an abnormal test result

APPLY NOWThe following criteria must be met to be eligible for the ENGAGE Award:
- Applicants must be registered as a 501(c) organization or provide primary care services within Massey's catchment area.
- Applicants must serve medically underserved populations, or offer affordable primary care services to low-income, uninsured, underinsured individuals or those facing barriers to accessing health care.
- Applicants must have a clean record and no history of discrimination based on age, sex, race, color, sexual orientation, national/ethnic origin or disability.
- Applicants must not have a political or lobbying agenda, nor can they represent individuals or family-based foundations.
- Applicants may only submit only one application for the ENGAGE Award and cannot actively hold another Massey community grant.
Awards may be requested between $5,000 and $25,000 (direct costs only) over a 12-month period dependent on the chosen project criteria listed below:
- Community Workshops and Events ($5,000): Development of community-based educational activities focused on lung cancer, such as screening or smoking cessation.
- Peer Education and Support Group Program ($15,000): In collaboration with another community organization, expand lung cancer awareness, prevention and treatment through education and/or support group development.
- Community Proposed Program ($25,000): Organizations must propose an innovative program idea to Massey with the objective to impact measurable change surrounding the priorities and goals outlined by ENGAGE award. The awarded proposal will have the opportunity to work closely with Massey and receive grant management guidance and education to support the successful administration of their project via dedicated Massey Community Grant Studio Hour sessions.
A panel of reviewers, composed of Massey affiliated community partners and staff, will review and evaluate all completed submissions using a standardized scoring rubric. Incomplete applications will not be considered for review. Applicants selected are required to provide quarterly progress reports upon award acceptance. Awardees will be notified the week of September 9, 2024.
A virtual informational session will be held on July 29 at 2:30 p.m. for interested organizations. The session is designed to provide detailed information about the award and offer an opportunity to ask any questions about the application process.
