Billing and insurance

Because VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center’s cancer care is provided through the VCU Health System, patient bills will be from “VCU Health” for hospital services, such as radiology, laboratory and pharmacy services, and/or from “MCV Physicians of the VCU Health System” for physician services, such as an office visit or interpreting test results. Below are the questions we hear asked most often about billing and insurance.

How much will my medical care cost?

If you are insured, Massey recommends getting in touch with your insurance plan to determine an estimate of the costs that you will be responsible to cover. Learn more about price transparency at VCU Health

How long do I have to pay my bill?

VCU Health expects payment on all bills within 30 days of mailing the bill.

What if I cannot afford to pay my bill?

VCU Health’s mission is to provide quality care to all who need it. If you do not have health insurance and worry that you may not be able to pay in full for your care, we may be able to help.

We provide financial assistance to patients based on their income, assets and needs. In addition, we may be able to help you get free or low-cost health insurance, or work with you to arrange a manageable payment plan. Learn more about financial assistance at VCU Health.

Financial counselors are available to help you determine eligibility for financial assistance programs and will also assist in setting up payment plans. Please call (804) 828-0966 to speak with a financial counselor.  Office hours are Monday-Friday, 9 am – 4 pm EST.

Why do I not recognize the name of the physician on my bill?

There are multiple possible scenarios. The physician might have read test results from laboratory or radiology services, acted in a supervisory function, or assisted your physician with your procedure.

Insurance

How do I know if Massey or VCU Health System contracts (or is “in-network”) with my health plan?

Contact your insurance plan to determine the extent to which your services at VCU Health System will be covered by your plan. Contact information for your plan should be on the back of your insurance card.

Should I bring my insurance card with me to the clinic or hospital?

Yes, the information on your insurance card is needed for the clinic or hospital to file a claim with your insurance company or companies. When you register, we will ask for information about your insurance coverage and have you sign a few forms. This registration process goes much faster when you bring your insurance information with you.

Will you bill my insurance company for me?

Yes, as a courtesy we will bill your insurance company. It is your responsibility to provide accurate insurance information to VCU Health System and any requested information to your insurance company (accident information, claim forms).

What is a co-payment?

A co-payment is a specific amount of money that an insurance company requires the patient to pay at the time of service. The amounts vary by the type of service you are receiving and your insurance plan. Please contact your insurance company to verify this amount.
