About

An NP who approaches every patient with compassion, patience…and humor

Stephanie Cordier was at her mother’s bedside when she was hospitalized in intensive care. It was an experience that inspired Cordier to seek her master’s degree in nursing at the University of Virginia, where she discovered her passion to treat patients battling cancer during a clinical rotation in bone marrow transplantation.

Cordier today is part of the team at VCU Massey Cancer Center’s Cellular Immunotherapies and Transplant Program, Virginia’s largest stem cell and bone marrow transplant provider offering comprehensive, collaborative and compassionate care tailored to each patient’s unique needs. “Oncology is a field that is never stagnant,” she says. “To this day, I continue to be excited about all the novel cellular therapies and new treatment protocols we have in our toolkit.”

Cordier, who previously worked as an emergency room and intensive care nurse in Seattle and Chicago, prepares her patients for unexpected complications that can arise from the months-long transplant treatment. She offers emotional support, and says humor is a valuable tool as she comforts patients through tough times that require patience and diligence. “Many patients comment on the nurturing and family-like atmosphere here at VCU, which is absolutely our goal,” she says.

In 2020, VCU’s Department of Internal Medicine honored Cordier for providing excellent clinical care. “There is no greater reward than guiding patients through perhaps the most difficult challenge of their lives,” she says.
