Patient Care

Why choose Massey?

Our patients choose VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center for two key reasons: the treatment options we provide and the cancer specialists who provide them.

We offer the clinical services and advanced treatment options that are only available at a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center like ours. Massey is one of only two cancer centers in Virginia designated by NCI, and one of only 70 in the United States.

We have hundreds of top cancer specialists serving the needs of our patients. Massey’s clinical and research staff provide a wealth of expertise in cancer diagnosis, treatment, prevention and symptom management.

Winner of the prestigious Circle of Life award, Massey is a recognized leader in palliative care and one of eight Palliative Care Leadership Centers nationwide.

Access to clinical trials

We also offer patients the newest forms of treatment, which are often only available on a study, or clinical trial, basis. Through translational research, our core area of research expertise, we translate our latest laboratory breakthroughs into patient care. Eligible patients may choose to participate in more than 100 clinical trials being offered at any given time.

Treatment by multidisciplinary process

At VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, your care is coordinated by the area's largest and most comprehensive multidisciplinary teams specializing in your specific type of cancer. This means that instead of one doctor determining your care, a cohesive group of medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, genetic counselors, clinical research nurses, physical therapists, social workers and others come together to recommend a customized treatment plan based on your unique needs. All of these specialists are available in one convenient location to provide the best, most coordinated care in the region.

Advantages of our multidisciplinary approach include:

  • Multi-specialty consultation in one place, at one time
  • Rapid diagnosis and evaluation for early detection and development of a comprehensive treatment plan
  • Standard treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, hormone and immuno therapies
